We decided to take advantage of the beautiful weather yesterday and had a bit of a day out.

We started out in Hexham...

Hexham Abbey

Hexham House, which dates from 1723

A few more views of the town...(note the Lagonda - it wasn't a one-off, as we soon discovered)

From Hexham we went on to the Roman fort at Housesteads, a massive site which is situated on Hadrian's Wall. It's ages since I've been there - in fact, on my last visit there I buggered up my knee, ended up in Casualty, and was on crutches for two weeks. But that's another story...

So, we pulled up in the car park and found ourselves next to this beauty...

On to the fort (with thoughts of [livejournal.com profile] sineala's 'Miles Scortillusque' to the fore)...

The pic on the right shows the Wall itself snaking away into the distance

The granary and the barracks

The latrines

When we got back to the car park we were surrounded...

Your starter for ten - spot the odd one out...

And just across the car park -

We eventually discovered that the Lagonda Club are holding their annual gathering in Northumberland this year, and are based at a posh country hotel not far from Housesteads. I suspect that JD might have got a bit sick of me declaring "Bunter! Launch the Lagonda!" in a strangulated upper-class accent most of the way home, although he never said a word, bless 'im...

So, a couple of pints at our local to finish up, and that was the end of a pretty perfect day!

Looks like a totally fab day! I've never been to Hexham and it's years since I went to Hadrian's Wall. A friend of mine, who's a classic car freak, would have been orgasmic over all those cars *g*.

Hexham's a lovely town to wander around, lots of great buildings. Must admit I don't visit the Wall as much as I should, seeing as how it's so handy.

What a fantastic place! Ruins, lovely cars (I'm sure I've been in one of them...) just the place for a daytrip on a sunny day. Ir's in my holiday folder already.

Thanks for sharing these!

Yeah, you could do it in a day, couldn't you. Lots of other lovely places to visit in the area too.

I think I'm going to take the kids up there this summer - C's just done about Romans this year at school, so he'll find it pretty fascinating, I think.

Thanks for sharing, and making me want to go all the more *g*

Oh, it's excellent for kids. I'm sure C would love it if he's interested in that sort of thing.

Put it on your 'things to do' list!

Brilliant! We went to Hexham on our trip to the Lake District about 15 years ago. I was determined to see Hadrian's wall and we took a day trip up that way. Your pics make me want to go back.

What a wonderful day you had. It is really amazing how much of Hadrian's Wall is still left after, what, 20 centuries? Those cars were lovely to see too.

It seems as if you are having our weather over your way now, leaving us with cloud and drizzle. :)

Thanks so much for sharing your day.

We're very lucky to have so much of the wall and its associated sites remaining. It's a great area to live in if you're interested in that period of history.

I think you've sent the cloud and drizzle over here today. And it's cold too! Brrrrr....

Oh, nice! It really is gorgeous up your way - and I have very fond memories of exploring Hadrian's Wall, and Housesteads at various times, so thank you for bringing those back! And the cars! Yeay! (Though I have to look up Bunter and his Lagonda... oh, it's Lord Peter Wimsey! I must read those books!)

Yeah, it was gorgeous.

I actually prefer Morgans - I always wanted one when I was a kid. Maybe if I won the lottery (and lived long enough to get to the top of the waiting list...)

One of the gas men at our place has a Morgan - it's bloody lovely!
