We've been without a main library in Newcastle for about three years, during which time the old one was demolished and a brand new one built on the same site. The new library opened last week and today we nipped in just for a little look around.

Seems as though they've brought a load of things out of store and made them freely accessible on the shelves for the first time - loads of lovely old books, transcripts of parish registers from all over the country and what's more...bound copies of the TV Times from the 60s onwards! And volumes of press cuttings relating to various subjects, including tv shows!

I think a return visit is imminent...purely in the interests of research, of course! *g*

Ooh, cooler than a cool thing!

Sigh, the library here is crap. Fine if you want to read Catherine Cookson, but no use for anything else.

Sounds like our local branch, which is all we've had to rely on while the main one was being built.

I can't wait to get in there and have a good old rummage around!

Oh! I'm envious of the TV Times issues! I used to live near a library that had microfilmed copies of our TV Guide, and I spent hours going through those issues, back in the day. Back before you had easy access to simple things like episode guides. I always found unexpected things by going through the issues one by one.

Have fun! Ooh, the joy of it all!

Sounds like a real little treasure trove, doesn't it! And the press cuttings should be good too, as I know that LC made a few personal appearances up here, and both he and MS appeared in productions at the theatre where I used to work.

Oh excellent! I'm not sure why you're sitting there right now, rather than finding lovely treats for us in the library? *g*

Our library's been closed since I got here, which is just on three years too - and no sign of it re-opening yet either. It'd better be as good as yours sounds if they ever get around to letting people back in again... See, Cambridge, land of no books!

Are you supposed to be getting a new library then, or has it closed for good?

Can't wait to get my mitts on the TV Times! *g*

It was supposed to reopen way back in January... then February... then April... Now...? *sniffs* The County Record Office was closed for a year when I got here too. Now the Scott Polar Archives are shut. Just - gaaaaah!
