I'm feeling desperately sorry for Caster Semenya, the South African athlete.

Bad enough that she's having to go through all these invasive investigations into her gender in the full glare of the public spotlight, now it seems that the SA authorities knew that there were likely to be questions raised and yet they allowed her to take part in the World Championships instead of dealing with the issue quietly at home.

She's 18 years old, for god's sake. Just a kid. Can you imagine having to contend with something like this when you were 18? God only knows how she's going to deal with it all.

Completely agree with you, C. The whole thing is dreadful.

Totally agree with you, and the Authorities DID know. It's appalling behaviour of them and disgraceful that she has to live this in the full spotlight :(

Aye, and aye again. I really feel for her. And the language used in speculation - "medical condition", "hermaphrodite" etc is just awful. It reduces a real person to a thing made up of body bits that have to fit one way or another way to be 'normal'. *gah*
